Spirit & Truth Fellowship
ADVENT SEASON 2021
Meaning of Advent/Wreath/Candle
Meaning of Advent:
Advent takes place during the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. During Advent we anticipate the coming of Jesus, the promised Light coming into a dark world (Isaiah 9:2). As we wait, we’re reminded of our own sin, the sin of the world and our longing for a Saviour. We look forward to celebrating Jesus’ birth, His present saving work in our lives and the day when He will return and restore all things (1 Thes. 4:16-17).
Meaning of the Wreath:
“Advent wreaths were eventually fashioned out of evergreens, twisted together in a circle to symbolize continuous life across the seasons, from the death of winter to the new life of spring. Naturally, this earthly symbolism also points to the spiritual symbolism of newness and the promise of eternal life and salvation offered through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (John 3:16). The circular nature of the Advent wreath, similar to a wedding ring or band, is further meant to reflect the unending love of Christ [or infinite love] and eternal life offered through salvation.”
Meaning of the Candles:
Each Sunday we light a candle to show how the light of Christ ever increases as we wait for His coming. We at Spirit and Truth use multi-colored candles to represent the diversity within our church and the larger scope of the Kingdom of God. We believe that all of creation belongs to our God and He shall redeem from every nation.
